Blog# 11- Nico Perez

From all the things that I learning in this course I think this are the 3 things that will stay with me or that stood out the most to me.

First thing that stood out to me was learning about “troublemakers” from Carla Shalaby. It made me realize that maybe the kids who get in trouble the most are the ones we should be listening to instead of punishing. they’re showing us that something in the system isn’t working and Instead of punishing them what we should do is paying more attention and taking the time to really listen to them because they could actually teach us a lot about what needs to change to make school better for everyone. If we actually paid attention to why they’re acting out, we could find the real problems and help them instead of pushing them away.

Another reading that I think will stay with me is learning about ableims how even if we learn in different spaces everyone is still learning the same way. Some students have way more struggles than others, and it’s not fair to expect them to fit into one way of learning. It made me understand that equity is more important than equality because it’s about giving students what they personally need to succeed, not just giving everyone the same thing and pretending that's enough.

Finally, the last reading that stood out to me is Aria by Richard Rodriguez because it reminded me of my own experiences learning English. I always struggled with my accent and i still do but the reading made me realize that language isn’t about sounding or pronouncing things perfect but it is about communicating and expressing our opinions. From my experience, I know how easy it is to feel embarrassed about having an accent and I still do but I firmly believe that accents are something to be proud of because they tell your story when I get become an educator I want to make sure my students to feel safe practicing without being judged, and know that making mistakes is part of learning, not something to be ashamed of.
